Hard to believe another Tableau Conference is coming up!

I missed last year's event and even though I was able to catch some of the keynotes online, it just wasn't the same as being there in person.

I realized I always come back INSPIRED from Tableau Conference. The opportunity to see what is coming in future versions of Tableau, to network with other data nerds, and to see what others are creating with Tableau is something I really enjoy.

So, if you're still thinking about attending, it's not too late to sign up.

Trust me, it'll be worth it! 😊

It’s a venue for makers to show examples of their work and interact with others about it. Many makers say they have no other place to share what they do. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) is often invisible in our communities, taking place in shops, garages and on kitchen tables. It’s typically out of the spotlight of traditional art or science or craft events. Took me a bit of time to get to it, but I finally posted my recap from the 2015 Tableau Conference.

I used a cool new app from Adobe called Adobe Slate that makes it super simple to add photos and interactivity to anything you want to communicate.

Check out my recap here:

Having just returned from the 2014 Tableau Conference, I was debating whether or not I should blog about it. I realized I've received so much from the Tableau Community over the years that it would be a shame to not share my thoughts. So, here we go ...

TABLEAU CONFERENCE IS BIG!

One thought that definitely stuck out was the sheer size of this year's conference! There were 5,500 attendees so it was definitely crowded at times. But it was a reminder of the incredible growth that Tableau has been experiencing and how, so many others have found Tableau to be a tool that not only gets the job done, yet also delights. I like how one person said that Tableau is the closest thing he's found to playing a video game at work. I totally agree!

If you're going to attend one data/analytics conference during the year, this is the ONE you want to go to. I was anticipating the first keynote because it always sets the stage for what is to come. Having heard Christian (Tableau's CEO) at previous Tableau conferences, I was curious as to what he would say. I liked how he brought it back to the mission of Tableau - to help people to see and to understand data.

I really enjoyed Christian's keynote on the "Art of Analytics". The main point that stuck out for me is that Tableau truly excels at combining Art & Analytics because you have the ability to quickly discover and analyze your data, but you get to unleash your creativity as well. It's about keeping you in the "flow" of analyzing and creating visual stories. And that's where many of the future improvements that are coming in Tableau version 9 are rooted from ... continuing that flow so everything is seamless from the data preparation to answering questions.

An interesting note is that Tableau didn't officially announce when these new improvements are coming in version 9. However, it sounds like it will be sometime in the first half of 2015. I was still waiting to hear about "Dynamic Parameters", but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that is coming in version 9.

The announcement that really impressed the attendees, including myself, was regarding Mobile - Tableau is working on a new app that is called, "Project Elastic" which allows you to explore data directly from your tablet.

It looks to take the simplicity and joy of using Tableau Desktop and mirror that same experience on a tablet. Will definitely be interesting to see how that progresses and when we all will get a chance to play with the app.

For many of us who have come to discover Tableau, I believe the reason it has made such an impact is that it is one of the few tools ... maybe the only tool that effectively combines both Data + Design. I always tell my friends and my co-workers that Tableau is like that secret weapon that just makes you look good. And it was apparent that at this year's conference ... the secret is out ... if you analyze data or do anything related to data, you need to use Tableau.

PARTY WITH YOUR DATA!

Another realization is that Tableau knows how to throw a party! It was unreal how they rented out the entire Seattle Center. I was roaming around the whole area ... from the Space Needle to Chihuly Garden and Glass. It was amazing that everything was free for us to check out - you could tell that everyone was having a fantastic time!

My favorite part of the party was when I was grabbing tacos from one of the food trucks and I ran into Jonathan Drummey. Not only is he a Tableau Zen Master, but he also writes a wonderful Tableau blog. I've read it many times and it has been especially helpful when I've needed to find a solution to a vexing issue I'm having with Tableau. We had a great conversation and something that struck me about Jonathan and the entire Tableau Community is that people are so willing to help one another. Jonathan encouraged me to blog and to share with the community. I have to admit the Tableau Community is strong and it's a BIG reason why Tableau continues to be so popular.

SKETCHING is KEY to CREATING!

One thing that caught my eye in the Space Needle was the wall that shared how it all started with a sketch. I've been challenged lately to sketch out my visualizations and to use analog tools (pen + paper) before jumping into digital tools. It's neat to see that what we think is new is often something that those before us have found to be effective. And there's just something that unlocks when we use pen + paper to sketch out our thoughts and our ideas.

I loved the #data14 wall which allowed attendees to express themselves creatively. Folks drew pictures and used words to share all the different places they came from. Over in the data playground (an outdoor area for attendees to hang out during lunch), there were these really cool Tableau drawings/sketches which also doubled as a maze - you'll notice they have a start and a finish.

INSPIRATION is the fuel to keep on going!

I think it was around that time that it finally hit me ... there's ONE main reason that I always enjoy attending Tableau Conferences and that's because ... you always leave INSPIRED. It's so thrilling to see what others are doing ... you start to see what is possible and you realize you are only limited by your imagination and some crazy table calc/hack that you never knew existed. :)

The speaker lineup this year was fantastic! Just having one of these guys would have been incredible, but to have all of them at one conference showed that Tableau really went out of its way to make this year's conference even BIGGER and BETTER!!

Each of the speakers reminded me that you gain so much knowledge and value when you hear from those who are in the data industry and from those who are not. There were so many of those "aha" moments during the keynote sessions that I had to constantly jot down notes - all of these were taken from tweets:

SIMPLE MATH & STORYTELLING!

There were so many wonderful sessions I attended. A few of my favorites were the Zen Masters Tips & Tricks Panel, Data-Driven Innovation & The New Interaction Paradigms of the Post-Screen Era by Cliff Kuang of Wired and 21st-Century Presentation (Visual Storytelling) by Garr Reynolds.

Garr Reynolds gave a wonderful presentation on storytelling that was informative, fun and entertaining! Would be awesome to have him as a Keynote speaker at next year's conference!

It was at one of the meetups that I heard Bruce Boston sum up what he does for living and it was so simple, but so true. For those of us who work with data ... pretty much what we do is ... add (+), subtract (-), multiply (x) and divide (/).

Or as Bruce would say, what he does in his work is simply: SIMPLE MATH + STORYTELLING. We are all trying to share insights and the most effective way to do this is through stories.

And I suppose that's where I'll end this blog entry. Keep on telling stories with your data. And keep on creating ... whether that be creative problem-solving, a creative data viz, or by unleashing your creative potential.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to find it, but I just stumbled upon the book, "The Sketchnote Handbook" by Mike Rohde.

It's something I've always enjoyed doing without even knowing what it was called. We've all doodled at one time or another ... most likely, when we were younger.

Sketchnoting is super helpful when you're trying to jot down the big ideas instead of every detail. Plus it's fun to use images as it's something we naturally connect with more than just words.

Even though I'm not a great artist by any means, I love the way Mike shows how anybody can "sketchnote"! This book is a fun read and it's very visual so you won't get bored ... I promise. :)

Recently, I went to a workshop about this new data analytics platform called Paxata. It's interesting to see data preparation tools like this coming into the market. As every analyst knows, most of the time is spent cleaning up the data and preparing it for analysis.

I wanted to try sketchnoting from the workshop and even though it's a bit difficult to try to do it in real-time, it really forced me to only go after the main ideas. Normally, I would have written down a lot more words, but focusing on the key takeaways was super valuable. And the best part is that when I look back at my "sketchnote", I can remember a lot of details about the workshop.

Anyways, check out my first attempt at sketchnoting and if you haven't done it yet, I totally recommend that you start sketchnoting NOW ... try it with a TED presentation or your next meeting. You might be surprised at the results!
I don't know if it's me, but it seems like data visualization is becoming a very popular space. One way to do that is through the use of infographics.
While most infographics are static, there's definitely an opportunity to make interactive infographics with the varitety of tools that are available.
I came across this infographic that shares the "10 Rules That Make An Infographic Cool, Effective and Viral." Found it to be helpful and just wanted to pass it along. One of the wonderful things about Tableau is that you can always find a new way to do something. Even though I already submitted my entry for the Social Media data viz contest, I wanted to use waffle charts that I found here. I modified the waffle charts slightly - it's fun to try using circles instead of squares just to give it a different look.

Waffle charts aka square pie charts work well for summary information, but the downside is that they take up a lot of space on the screen. The hardest part was being able to provide a global filter across multiple data sources. And I found out that the only way to really do it is to use a parameter which does require both data sources to have a common field.

Big props to Jesse Gebhardt for the help with getting the parameter option to work with these waffle charts! And for providing the template for creating waffle charts in Tableau.
Tableau is holding another viz contest, this time using any type of social media data. Since I've been tweeting a lot more lately, I thought it'd be very interesting to analyze my own tweets and of course, to enter the contest. :) Twitter makes it super easy to download an archive of all of your tweets (you can request this archive in the settings of your twitter account).

Once I downloaded the data, I ended up grouping my tweets into four main categories:

Apps - iOS & Android apps such as Flipboard, Zite, YouTube, etc.

Buffer - One of my favorite sites for spacing out your tweets according to a set schedule. I've been using it quite frequently (http://bufferapp.com).

Social - Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest

Web - Websites that I let tweet for me, the majority of them were done via a "Share button."

Some interesting pieces of data that I found after analyzing my tweets:

I have a total of 4,540 tweets since I began using twitter in August 2010.

22% of my tweets are actually retweets of other peoples' tweets! What can I say ... I like to tweet what others have shared ... over 1/4 of the time.

My top three ways of sharing my tweets is through the "Share button" via websites, Zite (a great app for curating content!), and Buffer. I enjoy using Buffer because you can setup a schedule of tweets and you can analyze its popularity very easily.

The day I tweet the most during a week has been Tuesday followed by Thursday, Friday, Wednesday, Monday, Saturday, and Sunday. Of course I tweet more during the work week than the weekends! I'm also in front of a computer much more often on the weekdays vs the weekends.

38% of my tweets on Tuesday have come from the Web category - majority via the Share button.

The month I have tweeted the most is April 2013 ... that's when I tweeted almost 400 times! That's an average of over 13 tweets per day. Wow!

When my tweets have originated from twitter, I've used Twitter for Android the most (since it's so convenient on my phone), followed by Twitter.com (webpage), and Twitter for iPad.

It's quite amazing to see the explosion of data + design. Everywhere you look, data is now being communicated in a visual way. The most common occurrence of this intersection of data + design occurs with infographics.
One infographic that is able to communicate a wealth of information in a visual way is the 2014 US Federal Budget from Visual.ly:
With the release of Tableau 8, there are a host of new features including brand-new visualizations. I took one of my old visualizations and revamped it with things you can only do in version 8.

Here's a summary of the things I changed from my original U.S. Unemployment Rate Viz:

Decided to pull the latest unemployment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (data is up to Feb 2013).

Utilized a treemap to show the Unemployment Rate % by state (from 2000-2012). Treemaps are an effective way to show many slices of information!

Tried using the new packed bubbles visualization to display the U.S. annual unemployment rate (avg) from 2000-2012. It's a catchy way to show information although it can be a bit tricky to use since it may or may not be more effective than your standard bar chart. I'll let you decide. :)

Floating containers everywhere! Added text to guide the user on how to use the map as a filter, put color legends closer to the visualizations, and put the slider for Feb 2013 Unemployment Rate % closer to the map itself. It's really nice to not have to line up all the filters/legends on the right side.

Kept the colors consistent on each visualization - using the Red-Blue diverging theme. With the ability to put color legends anywhere on the dashboard, it makes it much easier to see which legend corresponds to which visualization.

Adding multiple labels to visualizations like on the treemap. It's so helpful to not be restricted to just one label like before. You can add as many labels as you want! And Tableau is smart enough to know how much to display depending on your screen size.

There are so many more features in Tableau 8. It's definitely worth taking a look. One great new feature I need to learn more about is the Javascript API. It's going to allow people to really be creative! The possibilities are endless! Can't wait to see what others create using this new API.

Being a huge baseball, football, and basketball fan, I really wanted to see who spends the most money on payroll and who is the highest paid player in all sports.

Feel free to play around with this visualization. The insights I found
were really interesting and it's amazing how much money there is in
sports across the United States. We definitely love our sports and we're
willing to pay big bucks for entertainment. Hover over the

Powered by Tableau

Comparing payrolls across baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer, I discovered the following:

NFL has the highest total payroll at $3.5B followed by baseball (MLB) at $3B, basketball (NBA) at $2B, hockey (NHL) at $1.7B and soccer (MLS) at $49M.

New York Yankees spend the most money on payroll across all sports - this year they will spend $198 million on their players. Lowest payroll in baseball are the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres at $55 million. Lowest payroll in all sports compared is Chivas USA from MLS at $2.11M.

Not surprisingly, Alex Rodriguez is the highest paid player in sports - making a nice $30 million this year alone.

Even though baseball has the highest payroll by team, the sport with the highest total ($3.4B) and avg payroll ($107M) is the NFL. Football does seem to be the most popular sport in the United States.

In order of highest payrolls by team, baseball is #1 ($198M) followed by football ($138M), basketball ($90M), hockey ($71M) and soccer ($11M).

The disparity between soccer and other sports is quite large, but soccer is definitely not as popular in the U.S.

The team with the highest avg payroll across all sports compared is the Los Angeles Lakers at $6.9M. The New York Yankees have the highest team payroll, but their avg payroll is about $6.2M. No wonder so many people dislike the Lakers and the Yankees! Even the Orlando Magic have a higher avg payroll than the Yankees at $6.4M.

If you look at the median instead of the avg, the data really changes! The median is a much more accurate measure versus the avg because you can account for wild swings in the data. Certain players like Alex Rodriguez and Kobe Bryant make so much money compared to others that it skews the data. When we use the median, the Phoenix Suns have the highest median payroll at $4.3M. The Los Angeles Lakers' median payroll is at $4M. The New York Yankees' median payroll is only at $1.9M!

Not surprisingly, the New York Yankees have the highest standard deviation payroll at $7.9M. Just goes to show that if you're not a star player in NY, you might not be making the big bucks! Same goes with the Los Angeles Lakers who have the highest standard deviation payroll in the NBA at $7.4M.

The most lucrative position in baseball is the pitcher which accounts for 11 of the top 25 players ranked by salary per year.

In soccer, the most lucrative position is the midfielder followed closely by the forward (when looking at the top 25 players by salary).

In the NFL, it's the quarterback who commands the big dollars and in hockey (NHL), it's the center position.

If you're looking for the highest salary per individual, baseball is the sport you want to go with. If you're a star player, you will make the most money with baseball.

And please, let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

MLB = Major League Baseball

MLS = Major League Soccer

NBA = National Basketball Association

NFL = National Football League

NHL = National Hockey League

The ability to visually and effectively convey data is growing in importance. It's not enough to just show data, but to do so in a way that demands attention. And hopefully, spurs action.

Best way to present and to show data - use an interactive infographic.

This infographic does a great job of explaining what it is and how to make it go viral:

Having been a big Microsoft fan back in the 90's, I thought it'd be interesting to compare Microsoft against the hottest company at the moment, Apple. Both companies have had interesting peaks and valleys. While Microsoft has been on the decline, Apple has been on a tear.

It was interesting to look at the historical min, max, average stock price, and average volume of the two stocks. I then calculated the % daily difference to see the changes in close price compared to the prior day. Then I took it a step further by looking at the % difference by year using the adjusted closing (which takes into account any dividends/stock splits). It was neat to see the % difference by month too.

Another way to look at the data was to construct a candlestick chart to see the high, low, open, and close each day. And to see the difference between high and low and open and close.

Big thanks to the Tableau Viz gallery for the example on how to construct a candlestick chart! I definitely learned so much building this data visualization and that's probably the best part about this contest.

Key Findings:

In 2005, Apple's year to year change was 162.8%!

In 1987, Microsoft's year to year change was 190.1%!

Highest stock price for Microsoft ever was $180.38 on March 26, 1999.

Lowest stock price ever for Microsoft was $14.87 on March 6, 2009.

Highest stock price for Apple ever was $644 on April 10th of this year! Sadly, the stock did not end up closing at $644, but at $628.44.

Lowest stock price ever for Apple was $12.72 on April 17, 2003. They've come a long way since then!

The volume for Microsoft's stock was over 1 billion back on March 13, 1986. Wow!

* All historical stock price data taken from Yahoo! Finance.

Enjoy the visualization!
If you haven't already, you should definitely register for this conference! I've never been, but I'm looking forward to learning how to become a Tableau pro. It's going to be really special meeting other data analysts and other data heads/enthusiasts I've corresponded with in various forums such as LinkedIn and Twitter.

Hope to see you there!

Oh, and did I mention the conference is in Vegas? Just in case you needed more incentive to attend!

I know the economy has been tough for everyone lately and I wanted to see how unemployment rates stack up by state and for the U.S. as a whole. I pulled data for the last ten years from the U.S. Department of Labor. They have lots of fascinating data to analyze. It was hard to pick which data set to use!

I compared the annual average unemployment rate for the entire United States against state unemployment rates. I included the historical high and historical low unemployment rates to compare against July 2011 unemployment rates by state.

Some highlights:

Nevada had the highest unemployment rate (as of July 2011) at 12.9%.

California had the second highest unemployment rate at 12%. Not promising for my state!

North Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate at 3.3%. Looks like it's time to move to North Dakota!!

The last two years (2009 and 2010) have seen the highest spike in the U.S. annual average unemployment rate (looking at the last ten years). In 2008, the U.S. was at 5.8% and then jumped to 9.3% in 2009 and then 9.8% in 2010. It remains to be seen what the annual average for 2011 will be, but it doesn't look good so far.

Highest historical unemployment rate belonged to West Virginia which had an unemployment rate of 18.1% back in March 1983. Wow!

Lowest historical unemployment rate (2.1%) belonged to Connecticut and New Hampshire in Oct 2000 and May 1987 respectively.

In conclusion, things may look bad now, but we're not in the worst state we've ever been. Hopefully the unemployment rate will start to drop in all states.

Play around with the data, compare states against each other and compare them against the U.S. annual average unemployment rate.

Try clicking on the states on the map to filter; hold down Ctrl to select multiple states. This will update the Unemployment Rate Trend by State and the data table.

You can also enter states in the dialog box on the right. Use the sliders to filter states based off the July 2011 rate, historical high, and/or historical low unemployment rates. Then click on the bubbles on the state map to update the Unemployment Rate Trend by State and the data table.

Enjoy!
